The story begins in the vibrant 1970s. Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a struggling junior artist (extra) who is madly in love with the reigning superstar actress, Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone). Fate brings them together when Om saves Shanti from a fire on a movie set. However, Om’s dreams are shattered when he discovers that Shanti is secretly married to the ambitious and ruthless producer, Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). To advance his career and marry a billionaire's daughter, Mukesh traps Shanti in a burning studio. Om attempts to save her but is brutally beaten by Mukesh's guards and dies in a hospital, while Shanti perishes in the flames.
